Bokuman has stylish, pretty art and I’ve been aware of his gallery for several years. I had an opportunity available to squeeze in a commission and after examining my ideas, this was the one that best fit his art style. It had to be a female character and I was keen to continue the series I have in my gallery.

Title: Brides of Brainiac V

Background:
Tess Mercer is many things in the Smallville television series: a calculating villainess, an ally and enemy of Clark Kent, a member of Checkmate, she has worn many hats indeed. Brainiac was defeated in that world, but his counterpart from another dimension has use for Ms. Mercer. For references to Lena Luthor, please go to Title: Brides of Brainiac III , [link] .

Story:
She called herself the Prime Consort. Lena Luthor’s pride matched that of her father and she held herself above all the other Brides of Brainiac. Brainiac was aware of her pride and ambition, which unsettled him. It was too human of his ‘Prime Consort’ to resort to ego and emotion to maintain her status as his ultimate bride. Lena served with great purpose and recognition for her actions, accomplishing much, but her emotional attachments would serve as a weakness if left unchecked. While she was as deeply connected to him as any of his other brides, Brainiac did not intend to allow Lena’s emotional tendencies to become an exploitable weakness in his collective.

To strengthen her, to force her to evolve, adapt, and change, Brainiac introduced a rival. His fifth bride would be a match for Lena’s cunning, but paired with an equally fierce intelligence and willpower, would allow her to be a worthy competitor for Brainiac’s affections. She would be forced to channel her energies from jealousy and ambition to persistent development to keep pace. Who was this rival? What better match for Lena than herself? Albeit, it was a Lena from an alternate world, but the how and the where, was Brainiac’s secret.

Originally human, she was upgraded and made aware: the fifth Bride of Brainiac knew the stakes at hand and did not intend to fail her master. She was a long way from Smallville, but Tess Mercer knew better than to let someone else upstage her, even if it was herself.
